The Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon was the surprise guest at a meeting organised by Lawrie Quinn in Goathland to discuss Fylingdales.
Lawrie arranged the meeting after local people expressed concern about the safety of any expansion of facilities at the base, and also that it might be a target in a future conflict or from terrorist attack.
Mr Hoon said that any upgrade of Fylingdales would not require more land or external changes, and it would not increase any threat.
Speaking on BBC television, Lawrie Quinn said it was his job to report back the feelings of his constituents, which he would do.
